Another first for India: Medal in Table Tennis as the Men’s team clinched bronze

Indian Men’s Table Tennis team settled for historic bronze at the Asian Games 2018 as this is the first-ever Asian Games medal in Table Tennis. The team of G Sathiyan, Achanta Sharath Kamal and A Amalraj lost against South Korea 3-0 in the semifinal.

India had reached the semifinal after defeating Japan 3-1 in the quarterfinals. But in the semifinal, G Sathiyan, Achanta Sharath Kamal and A Amalraj, all three lost their singles matches. Sathiyan lost to Lee Sangsu in the opening game 11-9 9-11 3-11 3-11. Sharath Kamal’s experience did not come into handy as he lost to Young Sik Jeoung  by 9-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-7, 8-11. In the deciding match, Amalraj lost by  5-11 7-11 11-4 7-11 against Woojin Jang.

However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian team with an encouraging tweet, “Remarkable game by our Table Tennis champions. The stellar team gives India our first ever Asian Games medal in TT. Congratulations for the Bronze!”
