Indian Davis Cup Squad member Yuki Bhambri recorded the second biggest win of his career when he knocked out world number 22 and defending champion Gael Monfils in the ATP Citi Open in Washington. Bhambri enters the pre-quarter finals and now faces Guido Pella of Argentina.

Bhambri took 1 hour and 51 minutes for a 6-3 4-6 7-5 upset win over the sixth-seeded Frenchman. It is also only the second time that Bhambri has won two main draw matches at an ATP World Tour event since his quarter-final appearance at Chennai Open in January 2014. There he had beaten world number 16 Fabio Fognini but the Italian had retired from that match due to a fitness issue.

It was a good day for India as in the men’s doubles Rohan Bopanna and his partner Donald Young of USA overcoming their opening hurdle by defeating Canadian Daniel Nestor and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi of Pakistan in straight sets. However, a herculean task awaits Bopanna and Young when they take on fourth-seeded American brothers, Bob and Mike Bryan, in the quarterfinals.
