Sathish Shivalingam continued India’s gold rush in Weightlfting at the Commonwealth Games 2018.  Sathish defended his Glasgow 2014 gold in Men’s 77kg by winning this year’s medal with a total of 317kg.

Sathish clearly had edge over other competitors as he finished at the top position after the Snatch. He successfully lifted 136kg, 140kg and 144kg to give India a clear lead. In the Clean and Jerk, his nearest competitors like Jack Oliver of England and Francois Etoundi of Australa failed to lift all the three attempts. Sathish, thus, did not have to lift the third weight as he already got the gold after his first two attempts of 169kg and 173kg.

Sathish was born at Vellore in Tamil Nadu, to an an ex-serviceman who won gold medals at national level. He started Weightlifting early in his life and won gold in Glasgow 2014 with 149 kg Snatch and 179 kg Clean and Jerk lifts, totalling 328 kg. His lift of 149 kg in the snatch was a new Games record.
