Chaminda Vaas created a stirring record of becoming the first bowler to take a hat-trick with the first three balls of a match. The match was against Bangladeshis in Pietermaritzburg.

West Indies won the Junior World Cup at Mirpur in Bangladesh. It came at a time when the senior Carribean team had locked horns with their cricket board regarding payment dispute.
