PV Sindhu has become the first Indian shuttler to win a gold at BWF World Championships. She pulled off a brilliant 21-7, 21-7 victory against Nozomi Okuhara to clinch the title in Basel. She has also become the joint-most successful women’s singles shuttler at the world meet, having won 5 medals in just 6 appearances. Sindhu won bronze in 2013 and 2014, silver in 2017 and 2018 and the ultimate gold in this year’s Championship.

This in Sindhu’s first title in 2019 after a string of failures this year. She was up against higher-ranked Okuhara but it was a one-sided final. The India shuttler finished the match in 38 minutes.

Sindhu demolished Chen Yu Fei of China in just 40 minutes in the semifinal. She continued this good form in the final also and became the owner of this rare feat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated P V Sindhu on her win on twitter, “Congratulations to her for winning the Gold at the BWF World Championships. The passion and dedication with which she’s pursued badminton is inspiring.”
