Pickleball progress- New champions coming up from Poinsur Gymkhana

At the recently concluded Vidarbha Open, the players from Poinsur Gymkhana, Mumbai have won a total of 9 medals.

Poisur Gymkhana, which is a hub of sporting activities in Borivali region of Mumbai, has started Pickleball in February 2024. There are three international-standard courts at the Gymkhana where the North Mumbaikars can play Pickleball.

There has been regular coaching sessions in both morning and evening. Presently, there are around 50 players regularly practicing Pickleball at Poinsur Gymkhana.

Though, the centre has started operating recently, still players have shown good progress in the game. At the Vidarbha Open Pickleball Tournament held in Nagpur, the players from Poisur Gymkhana has won 9 medals in total.

Gopal Shetty, the man who is instrumental in developing the Gymkhana, has felicitated Harmeet, Omkar, Ganesh, Rupesh and Rahul for their commendable achievement at the Vidarbha Open.

The Gymkhana was established on 23rd January, 2002 encircling an area of 12 acres. With a vision to provide modern sporting amenities to the young talents of Mumbai suburbs, the Gymkhana started to function with Cricket and Athletics; and now, after 22 years, around 350 young sportsmen regularly take coaching in various disciplines like Football, Basketball, Archery, Skating, Gymnastics, Judo/Karate, Mallakhamb and Yoga.

Karunakar Shetty, Vice President of Poinsur Gymkhana, has said, “Every facility is provided to the players. There are able coaches also. I request people to come and play Pickleball here.”

The authorities are determined to take Pickleball to the next level. Gopal Shetty, who has been motivating every player, wants Poinsur Gymkhana to be one of the foremost centres of Pickleball in Mumbai. “It feels great to gather people one by one and develop sport in North Mumbai. Winning medals give confidence to the players and I try to give support to them.”

Pickleball is gradually growing here and with increasing numbers of players it is turning to be one of the key centres of Pickleball in Mumbai.

Academics and professional hazards sometimes took her away from her passion, but it never died in her. She always nurtured the never-ending dream.
