Saudi Arabia has declared a holiday after its national football team’s stunning victory over heavyweight Argentina in World Cup Group C clash at Lusail stadium in Qatar.

It was a historic result in the FIFA World Cup 2022 as Saudi Arabia defeated favourites Argentina 2-1 in a classic encounter. The Argentine team took the lead in the 10th minute of the match when Leo Messi converted a penalty. The first half was completely dominated by Argentina leaving the Saudis only to defend their post in order to avoid any further lead.

But as the second-half kicked off, it was a different Saudi Arab side with extra energy and confidence. They equalised in the 48th minute when Saleh Alshehri netted the ball with a classic left foot angled shot. Just five minutes later, the Saudi fans in the stadium erupted in frantic joy when Salem Aldawsari scored the second goal that eventually became the decider of the match.

Despite a lot of possession after conceding the goal, Argentina could not level the score. Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais put up a brave show by making at least five saves. Saudi Arabia, ranked 51st in the latest FIFA ranking, broke Argentina’s 36-match unbeaten streak, including winning the Copa America 2021.

As soon as the match ended, the Saudi fans erupted in joy in and outside the stadium. The celebration was not limited among the Saudi Arabian people, but the entire Arab world rose to celebrate the historic victory. The host nation, Qatar, that faced intense criticism over human rights, also had a sweet moment. Qatar’s Emir draped the Saudi flag over his shoulders at the match. A Doha skyscraper also flashed “Congratulations Greens.”

King Salman declared a public holiday in Saudi Arabia to celebrate the win. “King Salman orders that tomorrow, Wednesday, will be a holiday for all employees in public and private sectors as well as for students in all phases of education, in celebration of #Saudi Arabia’s stunning victory against Argentina in #WorldCup2022,” Saudi Gazette, an English language daily in Saudi Arabia, said in a tweet.
