Khelo India Youth Games: Maharashtra’s Kajol Sargar becomes the first gold medallist of this edition

The ongoing 4th edition of Khelo India Youth Games which is being hosted in five different cities – Panchkula, Shahabad, Ambala, Chandigarh and Delhi- includes 4,700 athletes from India’s 36 states and Union Territories.

17-year-old weightlifter, Kajol Sargar from Sangli in Maharashtra, clinched the first gold at the Khelo India Youth Games, 2021. Kajol lifted a total of 113 kg (Snatch-50kg and Clean and Jerk-63kg) in the Women’s 40kg category. With this medal, defending champion Maharashtra kicked off the medal tally.

Harshada Garud, the first junior Weightlifting world champion from India, rewrote the Youth National Record in the women’s 45kg category. In her second attempt, Harshada Garud lifted 83kg to overcome a stiff challenge from Uttar Pradesh’s Anjali Patel.

Earlier, L Dhanush of Tamil Nadu bagged the Boys 49kg gold medal with a new Snatch record of 88 and an overall lift of 190 kg.

Haryana, another predominant state of KIYG, got its first gold medal when Vrinda Yadav won the Girls 7.5km Scratch Race. Neerat Kumar won bronze medal in 1km Cycling and Mamta won bronze medal in 500 meters Mountaineering Cycling.

After Day 2 of the Games, Maharashtra is leading the medal table by winning 9 gold, 4 silver and 4 bronze followed by Haryana with 5 gold, six silver and 12 bronze. Manipur lies third with 4 gold medals and 1 silver medas.
